E-Sports tournaments are increasingly becoming popular. Like in any other kind of sports, there are those competitions that are more coveted than others. This happens for different reasons like hype, gameplay quality, or, most obviously, the available prize money. The biggest tournaments also attract the biggest bets because they involve the best players. Going by the attractiveness of the purse, here are some of the most coveted e-sports tournaments:

The International

The International is, by far, the largest tournament in the e-sports world. The Dota 2 tournament has remained at the top of the best paying competitions for much of the second half of the last decade. In 2015, it had an $18.4 million take-home. This rose to $20.8 million in 2016 and $24.7 million in 2017. It rose again in the subsequent years, hitting the $25.5 million mark in 2018 and $34.3 million in 2019.

The growing trend does not appear to be stopping anytime soon. The outbreak of the Coronavirus has offered e-sports a chance to grow as an alternative sport. This has continued to attract sponsors while the popularity of Dota 2 keeps growing. It still remains one of the best e-sports disciplines to bet on.

Fortnite World Cup

The growing popularity of Fortnite has reverberated both in its prize money and betting appeal. To date, the game has had over $30 million in awards. This puts it among the best paying games for players. Its most outstanding purse happened in 2019. The New York event had 100 competitors fighting it out for $15 million. It was won by Kyle Giersdorf, a 17-year-old American going by the gaming name ‘Bugha.’

PUBG Global Championship

The 2019 event of the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Championship was the most mouth-watering in the game’s history. It had a prize offer of $6 million, the highest since it was introduced in 2016. Gen G, a team from South Korea, took the honours in the final hosted in Oakland.

LOL World Championship

The League of Legends (LOL) matches its popularity with an equally attractive purse. It is a multi-player game that is widely popular in Asia and fast spreading to the world. The 2018 event stands out for a prize offer of $6.5 million. The series of games took place in Seoul, Busan, Gwangju and culminated in Incheon. Invictus Gaming was the winning team in this event.
